(Info from the Webmaster: SEPtember 1958 was one of the very best groups of national servicemen (perhaps the best ever ?) serving in the Royal Guard).

Alligevel kan vi alle sommetider have brug for en støttepædagog.
Her bliver Svend Erik Storm støttet af Patricia (Pat) Storm.

Saturday the 9th of August 2008.
On August 9th 2008 the association held a picnic at “Storm Haven” which was well attended.
We didn’t do a phone-around immediately beforehand and probably that is why the turnout was not as great as last time we held it here.  It might be an idea to go and write the date on the calendar as soon as you get the newsletter the next time, so we don’t have to spend time and money on calls to everybody when they really already know.

The weather was sunny and very warm, so it was nice to be able to do the afternoon visiting in the shade at the picnic table in the woods.

From the left: Pat Storm, Bente Pedersen, Kevin, Svend and Cora Christensen (Cora is half hidden), Aage Iversen, Svend Aa. Storm, Hilda and Knud Jensen, and in foreground Alf Jensen.)

Later we grilled our meat and had a great supper with all the delicious dishes brought by the ladies.

From the left: 286 MAJ 1950 Svend Christiansen, 1537 DEC. 1985 Jens Lind,

0865 APR. 1976 Wagnar Lærke, 329 JAN. 1958 Svend Storm, 356 MAJ 1949 Knud O. Jensen.

After supper we settled down for another few hours of cozy talk, but later in the evening the weather gods decided to visit too in the form of a thunderstorm, and everybody took shelter on one of the porches, but it wasn’t too long before the party broke up because of much cooler weather and because the storm decided to unleash moisture which it wasn’t supposed to do, coming from that direction like it did...

Saturday the 11th of October at 11:00 AM:
General meeting at the Dansh Club followed by a luncheon with ladies and guests at noon.

- for 40 års medlemskab.

Hilda Jensen, 450-Nov. 49 John Jensen, 329-Jan. 58 Svend Aa.

14 medlemmer og to gæster deltog i generalforsamlingen..

JULI 2009: Mindehøjtidelighed for Holger Frandsen.

Saturday the 18th of July 2009.  The Picnic.
The invitation:
Kære Garderkammerater.
We finally nailed down the date for the picnic.  It will be July 18th and the place will be Jan and Eva’s back yard at 60 Hidden Vale Crescent NW  right in Calgary.  If the weather demands it, we can go inside.  We had talked about having it in one of the city parks, but washroom facilities etc. would not be as convenient, - so thanks Eva and Jan for the invitation.
You will need to bring your own garden chairs, a steak or two for the BBQ, plus a dish for the pot-luck, and dishes for yourseves.  Jan and Eva says that they can ”borrow” the neighbour’s back yard if there are lots of people coming, which we hope, of course. - So, room should not be a problem.
I’ll be sure to send you directions, etc. closer to the date.  Please write it on your calendar right now while you’re thinking about it !!!
Læs om dagen HER.

SATURDAY the 17th of October 2009. The AGM.
The invitation:

The date for the fall AGM and luncheon will be Oct 17th.  That is the weekend after Thanksgiving, so it should not interfere with the long weekend in October.

Holger Frandsen, recruit number 843 April 1924, celebrated his 105th birthday on May 12th.
The President of all the guards associations sent him a greeting on the day. Holger is now the oldest living member of all Danish guards associations across the world.

Holger was a real “people person”, and so was his wife, Anne.  They were very dear elderly friends of my wife and myself over the years.
I’m sure that others will touch on his personal life.  So I’ll limit my effort to his many years of connection to the Danish Royal Life-Guards, - a fact he was very proud of - and the pride was mutual, as Holger got a handwritten birthday greeting from the head of the Guards associations across the world, Chamberlain, Major General (Ret.) Jan Brun Andersen, for Holger’s 105th birthday on May 12th.
Holger was from the island of Lolland, Denmark, and he was called up to do his required stint in the military as all males of the age of about 20 had to do.  Holger served in the Royal Danish Life-Guards, a regiment that has been around for 351 years, that is longer than the oldest British Guard Regiment, The Coldstream Guards. And it is one of the oldest serving regiments of this kind in the world today.
Holger happened to be serving at a time (1924) when the Russian Czar’s widowed mother had fled back to her home country from the communists in Russia, (she was an aunt on his father’s side to the Danish King Christian 10th.) And as you know, the Czar and all his family were brutally executed by the Bolsheviks shortly thereafter.  She took up residence in a large Villa North of Copenhagen and from then on she had three Danish guards patrolling the outside, night and day – that means a detachment of 9 guards around the clock, and three of her Russian bodyguards of many years living inside the villa.  Holger might well have been the last Danish guard alive to have done so, as the Czarina died a few years later of natural causes.
This regiment consists of young men from all across Denmark, many volunteering to serve in this elite regiment, whereas the other infantry regiments get their men locally.  This fact, - and the fact that many of us later join one of the many Guard’s Associations across the world, where we try to revive some of the spirit of the guards, the camaraderie and the loyalty, that we learned to appreciate while serving in the regiment, - makes for a very unifying force in that country.
Holger never forgot that, - not even when he wasn’t able to hear anything any more, - and I am quite sure that he in his last moments had not forgotten it either.
It is with deep regret we now say goodbye and may we meet again - to Holger Frandsen.

”Æret være hans minde.” - Honoured be his memory.

Saturday the 18th of July 2009.  The Picnic.
9 old guards and 10 girls were gathered at Jan and Eva Bjerreskov’s on July 18th in Calgary in perfect weather.
We played a few games of “Kubb”, an old Viking game, on the neighbour’s lawn and we had a good visit with old friends, while enjoying a few ”Faxe Beer”, donated by importer Ole Larsen from Montreal.  Thank you, Ole.
At suppertime the barbeque grills got fired up and a delicious “Pot Luck” dinner was enjoyed.
This year we had the pleasure of a visit from one of our Manitoba members, Jens R. Jensen from Dauphin.  Jan and I had visited both our Manitoba members in April while Jan was over there on business.

Svend.

Saturday the 7th of August 2010. The Summer Picnic.
August 7th was a perfect day for a picnic, and our venue was equally perfect.  We met at Kurt and Gitte Christensen’s place south of Calgary, which is at their daughter and son-in-law’s horse ranch.

Eva Bjerreskov and one of the fillies. – Those horses all love people -

They have around 100 to 150 horses there at any one time.  They raise full bloods for the racetrack.

-Alf, Kurt, Kevin and Svend Christiansen looking at some of the young stock-

They have a large staff to look after, and train, all these mares, stallions and foals.

The grounds are “knock’em down – drag’em out” beautiful and there is a lot of land.

There were a couple of golf carts we were invited to take and inspect the grounds on.

-Here Stinne and Pat are taking advantage of the offer.-

Kurt took Jan, Alf and myself on a tour where we, among other things, saw the characteristically Southern Alberta type of river, cut into sandstone banks, the “Sheep River.”
This river is of course named after the bighorn sheep which are still numerous further upstream in the mountains where the river has its head waters.

Kurt also showed us a huge collection of hunting trophies from both Africa and North America which was in storage.  This collection was acquired by his son-in-law in an estate auction, and is still mainly in the protective wrapping from the shipping to this ranch.

Among the many trophies we saw a Kodiak bear, all of him from Kodiak island in Alaska.  We also saw the biggest rack of moose antlers I have ever seen.
Today people do not generally appreciate hunting trophies like these, but I recall Hemmingway writing in one of his books that you are actually paying the animal respect by hunting for trophies.  Not only is the animal of whatever species near the end of its life when it has achieved trophy size, the animal is also very much appreciated by the hunter who spends thousands of dollars on guide, taxidermy, shipping, etc.  Hemingway suggested we might think of trophies in the same way a tombstone commemorates a person for many years into the future, - a person who would likely otherwise soon be forgotten.

Around 5:30o’clock the BBQ’s were lit, and amid cozy conversation and laughter we enjoyed the meal put together by the girls and Gitte.

Around 8:30 we said goodbye and most of us were home before the darkness really fell.  All in all a very successful picnic.

JAN 58 Svend Aa. Storm, FEB 71 Jan Bjerreskov, NOV 52 Alf Prytz Jensen,
MAJ 46 Aage Iversen, NOV 51 Kurt Christensen, DEC 85 Jens Lind,
NOV 50 Svend Christiansen, and NOV 49 Morten Pedersen

In the rear - from the left: Marilyn Lind, Eva Bjerreskov, Pat Storm half hidden… well sort of.  - She kind of floats along on the top of every situation.
Front row from left: Gitte Christensen, Bente Pedersen, Cora Christiansen, Stinne Iversen.

After the meal a few pictures were taken and the foreman thanked Kurt and Gitte for their invitation - he also mentioned that the foreman for DGU and the Copenhagen office is looking into having the “Garderblad” magazine shipped in such a way that we no longer get it several months (and in at least one instance a year) late.

Thank you again a wonderful afternoon and evening, Kurt and Gitte... Very few of us who were there will ever forget it.
Svend Aa. Storm

Saturday the 16th of October 2010 at 11:00 AM:
General meeting at the Dansh Club followed by a luncheon with ladies and guests at noon.
On the 16th of October Western Canada GF had the 66th annual General meeting and Luncheon.
All positions up for election were voted back in.
During the meeting the president noted that the membership had not changed during the year, but that to our disappointment we hadn't had any new members join either
- despite a membership drive at the Danish Club in Calgary.  He also mentioned the pictures from Chr. Castenskiold from Californien's GF had been remounted and framed by Jan Bjerreskov, who had done an excellent job of it.

After the meeting we had our luncheon at the Danish Club with ladies and guests.

Steffen Olsen and his son Einar sold raffle tickets which were later drawn for some donated prizes. The Raffle brought in over $300 which might be a new record.

Afterwards Jan Bjerreskov made a very interesting presentation and slide show of his trip to Newfoundland this past summer with Eva.
